About Fit Women
Welcome to Fit Women Over 40. About 7 years ago, I started to research articles & books to help me transition from being a young fit athlete into becoming an Over 40 fit and healthy athlete. In the process, I discovered that with the information I collected and gathered together that it may help some others going through such a transition as well. So I created the Fit Women Over 40 website and then this blog to gather all of what I’ve found into one single place. In the Fit Women website and blog pages will you find information, articles, stories, photos and videos for staying in shape after and well beyond your years past 40.
In addition, since my friends & I and even my Mother ( read her story here ) are a collective of healthy fit women over 40, I will include their stories, adventures and personal experiences as well, because we are all on the path to knowing as much as we can about keeping fit and aging well. Together we will report the latest findings, the best exercises and the best ways for you to have keep fit and stay healthy. We’ll take you through boot camps and cross fit workouts, rows across the Pacific, paddles in the Bay, all with the goal to help each other gain insight into building strength and mobility in our bodies & minds.
Why 40? Well for most women it’s when your body’s metabolism starts to slow down, you notice an extra pound or 2 adding to your waistline and you just don’t seem to have the energy that you used to have. Many women athletes over 40 know that feeling of not being able to train as hard as they’d like and having trouble in your busy life with eating a healthy diet. I wanted this website to be a wealth of articles & information specifically geared towards women over 40, 50 and 60 and above. Women at all ages have different needs and issues related to their on-going fitness and health.
Who Am I? Well turning 40, for me was the beginning of a very noticeable change in my body ( gaining extra weight, having to watch what I ate) and a slowing down in my abilities as an athlete. I was an Up State New York country girl turned athlete at a young age, competing in softball and tennis ( Billie Jean King was my idol then ) while still in grade school. In high school, I won numerous awards competing in 5 different sports every year til I graduated. Off at college, I became a Division 1 Field Hockey player on a full ride scholarship, our best year was 6th in the Nation. Then right after college when I moved to the SF Bay Area, I joined the Cal All-Blues Rugby Team and eventually played for the U.S. National Women’s Rugby Team and was capped as an Eagle. After 17 years of rugby, I moved onto getting my skipper’s credentials for sailboats and for the last 8 years have competed as an outrigger canoe racer and USTA tennis player. In January of this year, I also discovered Cross Fit Training, which I absolutely love and the 3 days/week for the last 8 months has increased my strength and confidence in my physical abilities once again, as well as making me more agile, flexible and has given me a marked decrease in my body fat.
So, now that I am 50, I have a better appreciation of what it takes to stay healthy & fit as we grow older. I still want to compete with the best of them and I don’t want my body, my mind or my health to slow me down. There is a wealth of knowledge to be found on this subject but there is also all kinds of hype and crap to sort through as well. People are always trying to sell you something or push some product on you. So part of my mantra has been to only suggest products, books, potions or herbs if I or someone I know has tested them, used them or highly recommends them. This is my personal passion and so I spend a lot time helping my family & friends with anything they have questions on. My ultimate goal is to share, encourage and contribute to your overall well-being.

Trek Women Triathlon Series Coming To East Bay on
June 27th
Exclusively Designed for Women
New York, NY –March 2010 – The 2010 Trek Women Triathlon Series, with races planned in eight markets across the United States, is coming to the Shadow Cliffs Recreation Area in Pleasanton, CA on June 27th. The Trek Women Triathlon Series joins the Danskin Triathlon Series, another Xxtra Mile property, as the only major women’s triathlon events created by women, run by women, exclusively for women.
Maggie Sullivan, Trek Series Director and president of The Xxtra Mile has been an integral force in women’s triathlons, and at the forefront of creating opportunities for women in the sport of triathlon since the first Danskin event in 1990. The Philadelphia Inquirer recognized Sullivan as the “The Grande Dame of Women’s Triathlons.”
“For the Trek Women Triathlon Series, I am privileged to be part of a team of talented professionals who collectively have delivered outstanding triathlon experiences to hundreds of thousands of women throughout the country for the past 20 years,” said Sullivan. “We are building on our collective experience and are committed to making the entire Race experience meaningful and memorable. We know how to deliver what women want.”
Legendary Triathlon Hall of Famer and Ironman Master’s world record holder, Sally Edwards will again serve as Chief Inspiration Officer for this second year of the Trek Women Triathlon Series.
“My role will be to help women find what it takes to participate in this type of activity,” explains Edwards. “I’m thrilled to be part of Maggie’s team in helping women exceed their own expectations.”
Race Registration in East Bay Now Open
The 1st Race will be held on June 27th in East Bay, CA with race distances consisting of: ½ mile swim, 12.5 mile bicycle ride, and 3.1 mile run/walk. Participants are encouraged to go to http://www.trekwomenstriathlonseries.com for registration as soon as possible, as space is limited. For further information, call toll free at 1-877-221-9665 or send us your questions at info@trekwomenstriathlon.com.
A Race That Fits Every Women’s Comfort and Experience Level
The Trek Women Triathlon Series will feature an unprecedented seven official entry categories including: Age Groups (separated by five-year increments), Mixed Age Group (so you can do the race with family and friends), Athena (150lbs +), Women in Uniform (military or government), Physically Challenged, Elite and Relay as part of a continuing effort to provide the best possible race experience for all women. Selected cities within the Series will also include “youth focused” triathlons.
It’s About Giving Back
The Trek Women Triathlon Series is dedicated to providing women with every opportunity to support themselves and their individual causes. 100% of the money from the Series’ Participant Pledge Program is donated to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and The National Association of Team Survivor. The Xxtra Mile has also launched “I Want to Tri for My Cause.” Through this promotion, the Series contributes a portion of registrant fees to the charity of choice for any group of women – from six to fifty-nine participants.
The National Association of Team Survivor is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization for women who have a present or past diagnosis of cancer. Team Survivor provides women with free group exercise, health education classes and support programs. The Trek Women Triathlon Series and Team Survivor allow women in the program to train, receive complimentary race registration for their first triathlon and benefit from special race day support.
In addition, the Trek Women Triathlon Series is reaching out and supporting women who have recently lost their jobs.
“The unemployment rate in this country is now over 7%,” says Sullivan. “There are many women who really need support from other women as they struggle to reassess their lives and their careers, or just get by. That is why we have allocated 7% of our entries at each Race, for those women who have lost their jobs…this year they race for free.”

All of the sudden I found myself at 46 hitting a physical and emotional wall. I was in the midst of early menopause which included the expected hot flashes and mood swings and the unexpected I just do not feel myself, I do not have any energy, I cannot sleep and what in the world happened to the old me, and boy am I grumpy. My husband (fitness and health guru that he is) introduced me to SHAKEOLOGY two months ago. SHAKEOLOGY is marketed as a weight loss meal replacement (which it can be but is also a bit misleading if you ask me). After a month of drinking SHAKEOLOGY ….which by the way tastes great in the chocolate flavor…. back on topic….I am now sleeping through the night, I can hardly wait to get to the gym to use my new found energy, my cravings for sugar and carbs have all but disappeared. What the heck. I wish I would have found this drink earlier. What is in this thing you ask me? Protein, Essential Amino Acids, Antioxidants, Digestive Enzymes, Prebiotics, Vitamins, Minerals, Phytonutrients, No Caffeine, No Gluten. 70 Natural Ingredients. You would have to eat a huge bowl of fruits and vegetables to equal one serving. I decided to dedicate myself to helping others discover the SHAKEOLOGY experience so if you want to see and feel the change you can email me or order at Beachbodycoach.com/julieshakeshththttp
